Rick Owens Talks Sustainability and His Latest Sneaker Collaboration With Veja

“For most designers, the prospect of creating a collectible, wait list–generating signature accessory is like winning the lottery. A sought-after shoe or bag can resist trends and seasons, often becoming a business in and of itself. Rick Owens understands the concept: He’s been selling his cult-coveted sneaker boots and high-tops for more than a decade, but a few years ago he started feeling uneasy about the frenzy. ‘The hype element of the sneaker market was starting to worry me a little bit,’ he said on a recent call. ‘When something blows up like that, it acquires this tone of status and consumption, and I wanted to turn that around a little bit.’ You’ve seen the kids waiting outside Kith at 6 a.m. to get some new limited-edition sneaker; you’ve heard about the guys reselling Jordans or Yeezys at wildly inflated prices on Grailed. ‘The next logical step was to talk about responsibility.'”
