The holiday season has just passed and I’m feeling my New Year’s resolutions hit me. Resolution number one: Clean one of my husband’s most visited spaces in our place, his closet. My husband is a marketing, fashion, TV/film producer I like to call a serial entrepreneur. He is an incredibly fashionable man with no time on his hands.
Let’s get to cleaning.
Have you ever opened up the door to your man’s wardrobe and seen an incredible sea of shoes and clothes that did not have any proper place to be? Me too. I’ve decided that if my closet can be clean why not clean his, ease his mind, and help simplify his day to day dressing routine.
I found that having a place for everything eases his mind and creates clarity when getting dressed. You know the saying work smarter not harder? The same applies to men’s closets (or anyone’s closet for that matter).
First step: I put all items into two categories: donations and keep. I started by removing his unwanted wardrobe. These items went into donations. Then we talked about what items he loved and those went to the keep pile.
This process of keeping items you need and getting rid of the items you no longer want will help minimize the impulse buy. I have come to the realization that if you see what you own, you are able to actually wear the items you have, feeling less like you have nothing to wear, and getting dressed becomes much more of a joy. This also helps prevent those duplicate purchases resulting in a waste of money and precious time.
Second step: Once we knew what he wanted to keep, I created spaces for each category to have a place in his closet (shirts, pants, belts, shoes, jackets).
The final product:
Finally, there is floor space. This gives him the freedom to select items he hasn’t worn in ages due to the inability to get to them in his cramped space. Space to move is crucial when you have a walk-in closet and creates a sense of ease and well-being with ones self. You can then focus on other things that need to get done instead of your wardrobe or looking at a mess.
It was therapeutic for us to clean his space. He loved this process and I can’t wait to share with you his chic men’s must haves in the coming weeks.
